How to Predict The Success of Your Film

Did you know that you can predict the success of your film before you even start filming? So, what I am going to reveal will really help you make successful films without big budgets. Because you can practically produce great films with smaller budgets or with whatever resources you have. You may think, it must be great scripts, then. It is also true to some extent that a great screenplay is an important ingredient in the making of a great film. But that’s only half the battle.

Did you know that you can predict the success of your film before you even start filming? What I am going to reveal will really help you make successful films without big budgets. Because you can practically produce great films with smaller budgets or with whatever resources you have. You may think: It must be great scripts, then. It is also true to some extent that a great screenplay is an important ingredient in the making of a good film. But that’s only half the battle.

Because the thing is it’s not the funding or budget or great screenplays that will be the only factors that will determine the success of your films. It’s the planning or the pre-production stage. So, if you don’t plan your filmmaking project well in advance, your film will sink, and nothing will matter. Not even a great script or a talented actor can rescue your film. Therefore, you can already predict the success of your film by looking at how you execute your pre-production phase. For example, if you’re impatient and just want to make something right here right now, the result is an unwatchable film and a chaotic film set - almost guaranteed. Some may be lucky and manage to make a good film out of it regardless. But it’s seldom. I have made this mistake myself now and again, and that’s why I speak from my experience and can tell you that the pre-production process is paramount; it’s as important as a great script.

So, don’t treat this step as something unimportant. You have saved up some money to make your film, or have borrowed from family or friends, for instance, and then only spend about a few days or weeks to plan the making of your film. It’s just not enough. You may think it’s just a short film, so I don’t need lots of time to plan things. But to streamline the making of your film, you still need considerable time although it’s a short film: At least a month or two for the pre-production development alone, to make sure that you have everything under control. Because when you don’t plan it well, you are likely to forget lots of things, hire the wrong people, make the wrong budget, find the wrong locations and so forth. Consequently, when you’re finally on set and start filming, then when things don’t go as planned you will begin to panic, and things will turn into chaos. The cast and crew will also begin to notice that you’re unprepared. They will thus begin to lose their trust in you that you can manage a film set, and things will just start to go downhill for you. You don’t want that, right?

In conclusion, to prevent a disaster, so that your film will be a success, you must allocate enough time to carry out the pre-production process to perfection. I don’t mean that you have to be a perfectionist. Just takes your time to prepare things, so you know what you’re doing when you’re on set. Because when you have organised everything well beforehand, you will feel more confident. Then, if something goes wrong during the filming, you are not that nervous because you already have plan B, C, D and so on in place including how to cope with unforeseen issues that may happen. Because some problems will inevitably occur during the filming no matter how much you have planned. But a thorough planning will just help you effortlessly deal with them whatever they may be.

Therefore, if you’re confident on set and in what you do, the cast and crew will also sense it. They will then also feel confident and trust you that you can lead them to make a great film together. Then, everyone will give it their all to create a piece of art together and to help bring your vision to life.

When you’re assertive on set since you have planned everything well in advance, you will also feel optimistic that your film will be a success. If not, you don’t mind that much and just think of it as a learning curve. You will also treat your cast & crew the way you want to be treated yourself. Because you’re so well-prepared, so you’re just in a good mood. Your cheerfulness will then inspire everyone around you to be more calm and friendly as well, which will help create a good working environment, and everyone will just want to do their best to collectively make a great film.
